History
The story of Villa Cimena spans centuries, evolving through time while leaving its mark on every stage of its remarkable journey. A place where art, landscape and history are woven together into an enduring legacy.
Origins
Villa Cimena was built in 1663 as a country residence and underwent several transformations before reaching its greatest splendour during the nineteenth century. It was then that the noble Thaon di Revel family embarked on an ambitious programme of renovation, entrusting the project to Royal Architect Carlo Sada.
It was Count Ottavio Thaon di Revel, Minister of Finance of the Kingdom of Sardinia and later Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, who commissioned the complete reconstruction of the residence in the Neoclassical style, creating the architectural identity that defines Villa Cimena to this day.
This transformation introduced the Villa’s magnificent façade, distinguished by its double order of Ionic and Corinthian columns and its imposing pediment adorned with Palladian-inspired statues. Overlooking the Po Valley, the building establishes a striking dialogue between architecture and landscape.
From 1847, the extensive park surrounding the Villa also began to take shape, designed by landscape architect Marcellino Roda, further enhancing the harmony between the residence and its natural setting.
From the 1840s onwards, the interiors were enriched with an extraordinary decorative programme created by the finest craftsmen working for the Royal House of Savoy.
Master cabinetmakers from Piedmont, painters including Michele Antonio Rapous, Francesco Beaumont and Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli, together with the celebrated bronzes of Pierre Philippe Thomire, sculptures by Lorenzo Bartolini, furnishings by Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo and majolica produced by the Rossetti Manufactory, all contributed to creating an artistic and historical ensemble of exceptional significance.
Throughout its history, Villa Cimena has welcomed many distinguished figures, including Pope Pius XI, Victor Emmanuel II and Maria Adelaide of Austria, reinforcing its place among the historic residences closely connected to some of the leading personalities of Italian and European history.
